Judging Quality Before You Buy

Specs on a box tell you almost nothing about whether you'll still like a device in two years. Four things actually predict it:

Local control. Does the device keep working when the cloud is down? Anything controlling a door, a lock, or heat should. Check whether the manufacturer supports a local API or Matter — both are good signs.

Firmware history. Look at whether the company has shipped updates for its previous generation. A brand that abandons hardware after eighteen months will do it again.

Power source. Battery devices are easy to place and annoying to maintain. Ten battery sensors means ten batteries to change on ten different schedules. Prefer mains power for anything central.

Automation ceiling. Can the device be a trigger, or only a target? A sensor that reports to its own app but can't fire an action in your ecosystem is a dead end.
