You can probably skip a dedicated hub if you have fewer than about ten devices, they are all Wi-Fi based, they are all from one ecosystem, and you mostly control them by voice. A smart speaker will handle basic scheduling and grouping just fine.

You want a smart home hub if any of the following apply. You have devices from three or more brands. You want automations that survive an internet outage. You are adding door and window sensors, motion sensors, or smart locks, which are almost always Zigbee, Z-Wave, or Thread. You have dead zones where Wi-Fi struggles, since mesh protocols relay signals device to device. Or you simply want one app instead of nine.

The tipping point usually arrives faster than people expect. Most homeowners hit it somewhere around the second or third room they automate.

The Main Types of Hub, Compared

Ecosystem hubs. These are the smart speakers and displays that double as controllers, plus dedicated boxes from the big platforms. They are the easiest on-ramp: you plug it in, open the app, and devices appear. Newer models include Thread radios and act as border routers, which matters a lot as Matter-certified products become the default. The tradeoff is that you are living inside one company's rules about what integrates.

They are the enthusiast pick. The honest caveat is that you become your own tech support, and the initial configuration is a real project.

Security-panel hubs. Some alarm systems double as automation hubs. If professional monitoring is a priority, this consolidates two purchases. Device compatibility is usually narrower.

How to Choose Without Overthinking It

Start with a written inventory of what you own and what you plan to buy in the next year. Look up which protocol each device uses. That single list eliminates most of the decision, because your hub simply has to cover those radios.

Then apply four filters.

Protocol coverage. Matter support is close to non-negotiable now, and a Thread border router is worth having even if you own no Thread devices yet. If you want Z-Wave, confirm it explicitly, since many newer hubs dropped it.

Local versus cloud processing. Ask whether automations run on the device itself. If the answer is no, an internet outage takes your house with it.

Subscription costs. Some hubs are cheap upfront and charge monthly for the features you actually wanted, especially camera recording and advanced automation. Add three years of fees before comparing prices.

Automation depth. If you want conditional logic, multiple triggers, and time or presence conditions, check that the app supports it. Basic schedule-only interfaces get frustrating quickly.

One last practical note: buy the hub before you buy many more devices. Choosing your controller first and then selecting compatible gear is dramatically cheaper than buying devices you later discover your hub cannot see.
