Best ecobee Thermostat in 2026: Premium vs Enhanced vs Essential

By Ethan Halfhide · Updated

The best ecobee thermostat for most homes is the Smart Thermostat Premium ($259.99 as of September 2026) because it is the only model with a room sensor, air quality monitor and Siri or Alexa built in. The Enhanced ($199.99) is the value pick, and the Essential ($139.99) is the budget option. Below, all three models sold on ecobee.com compared spec by spec.

The short answer

ecobee sells three smart thermostats directly to US homeowners on ecobee.com right now: the Smart Thermostat Premium, the Smart Thermostat Enhanced and the Smart Thermostat Essential. They share the same app, the same eco+ energy software and the same 3-year warranty. What changes as you move up is hardware: built-in occupancy sensing, a room sensor in the box, an air quality monitor and a voice assistant.

  • Get the Premium if you have rooms that run hot or cold, want an air quality monitor, or want Siri or Alexa built into the thermostat.
  • Get the Enhanced if you want automatic home and away sensing, the large screen and the Power Extender Kit in the box, but don't need a voice assistant or air quality monitoring.
  • Get the Essential if you have a simple heating and cooling system and want the lowest price. Check whether your home has a C wire first.

Older models such as the ecobee3 lite and the SmartThermostat with Voice Control are no longer on ecobee's consumer lineup page. The Premium replaced the SmartThermostat with Voice Control in 2022, and the Essential was announced as the ecobee3 lite's replacement in January 2025.

ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium

Who it's for: Homes with uneven temperatures between rooms, people who want air quality alerts, and Apple or Alexa households that want voice control on the wall.

Key facts

  • $259.99 on ecobee.com as of September 2026.
  • The only current ecobee model with one SmartSensor room sensor in the box. The sensor reports temperature and occupancy, so the thermostat can prioritize the rooms you are actually using.
  • Built-in indoor air quality monitor with alerts, tips and air filter reminders.
  • Choice of Siri or Alexa built in. Siri needs an Apple home hub such as a HomePod or HomePod mini.
  • Streams Spotify Connect and Amazon Music, and can send audio to a Bluetooth speaker.
  • Can act as a hub for ecobee Smart Security. Smoke alarm sound detection and security monitoring need a paid Smart Security subscription.
  • Widest equipment support in the lineup: heat pumps with 2-stage aux heat, and one 1-wire or one 2-wire accessory such as a humidifier, dehumidifier or ventilator.

Trade-offs: It costs $60 more than the Enhanced. If you already have a smart speaker and no problem rooms, you pay for features you won't use. For independent context, PCMag rates it 4.5 out of 5 ("Outstanding").

A detail worth knowing when comparing prices: at ecobee.com prices as of September 2026, the Essential plus a SmartSensor 2-pack ($99.99) comes to $239.98, only $20 less than the Premium, which already includes one sensor.

ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced

Who it's for: Most people who want the ecobee experience with automatic home and away detection, and who control their home through a phone or an existing smart speaker.

Key facts

  • $199.99 on ecobee.com as of September 2026.
  • Built-in radar sensor detects occupancy and proximity, so eco+ can adjust heating and cooling when nobody is home without extra sensors.
  • Same 4-inch, 540 x 540 touchscreen as the Premium.
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz).
  • Power Extender Kit included, so it installs in most homes without a C wire.
  • Works with SmartSensors, sold separately at $99.99 for a 2-pack (as of September 2026).

Trade-offs: No air quality monitor, no built-in voice assistant, no music streaming and a plastic shell instead of the Premium's zinc alloy frame. Accessory support is limited to one 1-wire device, and heat pump support stops at 1-stage aux heat.

ecobee Smart Thermostat Essential

Who it's for: Budget buyers with a conventional furnace and AC or a basic heat pump who want app control, scheduling and ecobee's energy reports.

Key facts

  • $139.99 on ecobee.com as of September 2026. It launched at $129.99.
  • ENERGY STAR certified. ecobee claims savings of up to 23%.
  • Works with Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant and Alexa.
  • 2.8-inch color touchscreen.
  • Works with SmartSensors (sold separately). ecobee says Essential owners get its eco+ occupancy features by pairing a SmartSensor.

Trade-offs: No built-in occupancy sensor, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, and narrower equipment support (conventional 2H/1C or 1H/2C, heat pump 2H/1C). The Power Extender Kit is not in the box. If your home has no C wire, add $24.99 for the kit (ecobee.com price as of September 2026), which brings the total to $164.98, about $35 less than the Enhanced with its kit included.

How to choose

  1. Check your wiring first. Use ecobee's Thermostat Compatibility Checker. If you have no C wire, the Enhanced and Premium include the Power Extender Kit and the Essential does not.
  2. Check your equipment. Two-stage heat pumps with auxiliary heat, or a whole-home humidifier or ventilator, point you toward the Enhanced or Premium. The Premium is the only one that supports a 2-wire accessory.
  3. Decide whether you need room sensing. If one bedroom or a finished basement is always too hot or too cold, a SmartSensor helps. The Premium includes one; the other two need a 2-pack at $99.99 (as of September 2026).
  4. Decide whether you want voice and air quality on the wall. If yes, only the Premium has them. If you already own an Echo or HomePod, the Enhanced covers voice control through that speaker.
  5. Look for a rebate. ecobee has a rebate lookup on its site and says an eligible rebate can cover the full cost of the device in some areas.

Compatibility notes

  • All three run on 24VAC power through the C and R terminals. ecobee's Power Extender Kit lets most homes without a C wire power the thermostat without running a new wire.
  • The Power Extender Kit only works with 24VAC systems. ecobee lists millivolt systems, high-voltage systems, dual transformer setups and fan coil or communicating units as incompatible with the kit.
  • The Enhanced and Premium also support boilers and PTAC or fan coil units with up to 3 fan speeds, according to ecobee's spec sheets.
  • SmartSensor for rooms works with the Premium, Enhanced, Essential and several older ecobee models, including the ecobee3 lite, ecobee4 and SmartThermostat with Voice Control.

What we don't know

  • Matter support. None of ecobee's current product or spec pages that we checked mention Matter, so we can't confirm Matter support for any of these models.
  • A new model in 2026. We found no official ecobee announcement of a new thermostat as of September 29, 2026.
  • Real-world savings. The 23% and 26% figures are ecobee's claims against a 72°F hold. Actual savings vary by home.
  • One inconsistency on ecobee's site. A promotional block on the Enhanced product page describes indoor air quality monitoring, but ecobee's comparison table and spec sheet list air quality monitoring as a Premium-only feature. We follow the comparison table.
  • The Smart Thermostat Lite. It appears on ecobee's contractor comparison page (aimed at light commercial and multifamily installs) but not on the consumer lineup, and ecobee says it is available only through local HVAC installers, so we left it out of the table.

Frequently asked questions

Which ecobee thermostat is the best?

For most homes, the Smart Thermostat Premium. It is the only current ecobee model with a SmartSensor in the box, an indoor air quality monitor and Siri or Alexa built in. If you don't need those, the Enhanced keeps the radar occupancy sensor and large screen for $60 less (ecobee.com prices as of September 2026).

What is the difference between the ecobee thermostat models?

The Premium adds a SmartSensor, air quality monitoring, a built-in voice assistant and music streaming. The Enhanced has built-in radar occupancy sensing and the same 4-inch screen but none of those extras. The Essential has a smaller 2.8-inch screen, no built-in occupancy sensor, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only and no Power Extender Kit in the box.

Is ecobee Premium or Enhanced better?

The Premium is better equipped: it includes a SmartSensor, an air quality monitor, Siri or Alexa, and support for 2-stage aux heat and 2-wire accessories. The Enhanced is the better value if you already have a smart speaker and don't have rooms that run hot or cold.

Which ecobee thermostats come with a room sensor?

Only the Smart Thermostat Premium includes a SmartSensor in the box. The Enhanced and Essential both work with SmartSensors, which ecobee sells in a 2-pack for $99.99 as of September 2026.

Do ecobee thermostats need a C wire?

All three are powered by 24VAC through a C wire. If your home doesn't have one, the Power Extender Kit usually solves it. It comes in the box with the Premium and Enhanced and costs $24.99 separately for the Essential (ecobee.com price as of September 2026). It does not work with millivolt or high-voltage systems.

Is ecobee coming out with a new thermostat in 2026?

We found no official ecobee announcement of a new thermostat as of September 29, 2026. The newest model in the lineup is the Smart Thermostat Essential, announced in January 2025 as the replacement for the ecobee3 lite.
