The August Smart Lock 4th Gen is the retrofit option: it mounts over the interior side of your existing deadbolt, leaves your exterior hardware completely unchanged, and your existing keys still work. This makes it the go-to for renters, HOA buildings, or anyone who needs smart access without landlord permission. Built-in Wi-Fi means no separate bridge required — it connects directly to your router for remote access, guest code sharing, and activity monitoring through the August app. DoorSense uses a door frame sensor to confirm the door is physically closed before Auto-Lock engages the bolt, eliminating the risk of locking a door that's slightly ajar. Works with Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, and SmartThings. The Activity Feed logs every lock and unlock event with timestamp and method. Auto-Unlock uses geofencing to disengage the lock as your phone approaches. Battery life averages 3–6 months on 4 AA batteries.
