Best Kwikset Smart Lock in 2026: Every Connected Model Compared

By Ethan Halfhide · Updated

The best Kwikset smart lock for most homes is the Halo Select ($259 on kwikset.com as of October 2026): Wi-Fi with no hub, optional Matter for Apple Home, Alexa and Google Home, 250 codes and a door-ajar sensor. Pick the Aura Reach ($179) for Matter on a budget, the Halo Touch ($208) for fingerprint entry, or the Home Connect 620 ($164) for Z-Wave systems like Ring Alarm.

The short answer

Kwikset sells seven connected smart lock families on kwikset.com right now: Halo Select Plus, Halo Select, Halo Touch, Halo (touchscreen), Halo Keypad, Aura Reach and Home Connect 620, plus two older Zigbee SmartCode deadbolts (914 and 916) for Zigbee security panels. They differ mainly in how they connect (Wi-Fi, Matter over Thread, Bluetooth, Z-Wave or Zigbee) and how you get in (touchscreen, push buttons, fingerprint or a tap of your iPhone).

  • Get the Halo Select ($259) if you want one lock that works with Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home, with geofence auto-unlock and a door sensor that tells you when the door is left open.
  • Get the Halo Select Plus ($309) only if you want to tap an iPhone or Apple Watch to unlock with Apple home keys.
  • Get the Aura Reach ($179) if you already have a Matter hub with Thread and want the cheapest Kwikset lock that joins Apple Home, Alexa and Google Home.
  • Get the Halo Touch ($208) if you want fingerprint entry instead of a keypad.
  • Get the Halo ($208) or Halo Keypad ($199) if you use Alexa or Google and want simple Wi-Fi control without Matter.
  • Get the Home Connect 620 ($164) if your lock will live on a Z-Wave system such as Ring Alarm or SmartThings.

All prices are Kwikset's own list prices on kwikset.com and the Kwikset store as of October 2026. Retailers often sell the same locks for less.

Halo Select

Who it's for: Most homeowners who want a full-featured smart deadbolt that fits any of the big smart home platforms.

Key facts

  • $259 on kwikset.com as of October 2026, in Satin Nickel or Matte Black. Kwikset also lists a Contemporary version at the same price and a Soft Modern version (see "What we don't know" for their SmartKey listing).
  • Wi-Fi built in, so remote lock and unlock, guest access and the event log work through the Kwikset app with no hub.
  • Matter over Thread built in. Kwikset says you choose Matter or Wi-Fi connectivity, and that Matter needs a compatible smart home hub with Thread and Matter support.
  • Up to 250 temporary, scheduled or permanent access codes.
  • Geofence auto-unlock, auto-lock on a timer or by location, and a slim door sensor that sends a phone alert if the door is left ajar for 15 minutes.
  • UV-, water- and humidity-resistant backlit touchscreen, BHMA Grade AAA, UL 20-minute fire rating.

Trade-offs: The Matter and Wi-Fi modes are a choice, not both at once, and Kwikset warns that some smart home platforms do not yet support every lock feature over Matter. Kwikset lists a narrower door range than most of its locks (1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches), so measure a thick door before you buy.

Halo Select Plus

Who it's for: iPhone households that want to unlock by tapping a phone or Apple Watch.

Key facts

  • $309 on kwikset.com as of October 2026, in Satin Nickel or Matte Black.
  • Adds Apple home keys: NFC tap to unlock with an iPhone or Apple Watch.
  • Otherwise matches the Halo Select on Kwikset's product page: Wi-Fi or Matter over Thread, 250 codes, geofence auto-unlock, door-ajar alerts, intrusion alerts for invalid codes or tampering, Grade AAA.
  • Kwikset lists a Limited Lifetime Mechanical Warranty, Limited Lifetime Finish Warranty and 1-Year Limited Electronics Warranty.

Trade-offs: You pay $50 more than the Halo Select for one feature that only helps Apple users. Kwikset's spec table lists a door thickness of 1-3/4 to 2 inches, different from the Halo Select's range, so check your door against the exact model.

Halo Touch

Who it's for: People who would rather use a fingerprint than remember a code, and families with kids who lose keys.

Key facts

  • $208 on kwikset.com as of October 2026. Contemporary and Traditional styles.
  • Enroll up to 100 fingerprints (50 users), managed in the Kwikset app.
  • Wi-Fi built in, no hub, works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.
  • Kwikset's product page and photo show a fingerprint reader and a SmartKey keyway, with no keypad.
  • BHMA Grade AAA.

Trade-offs: No keypad means no code to give a dog walker or contractor; they need their own enrolled fingerprint or a key. No Matter and no Apple Home listed. Kwikset's spec table lists its UL fire rating as "Not rated", where the other Halo models list 20 minutes, and it fits doors 1-3/4 to 2 inches thick.

Halo (touchscreen) and Halo Keypad

Who it's for: Alexa or Google Assistant homes that want reliable Wi-Fi control and code entry without paying for Matter.

Key facts

  • Halo touchscreen: $208. Halo Keypad: $199. Both on kwikset.com as of October 2026.
  • Both connect straight to home Wi-Fi with no hub or bridge, and Kwikset says Alexa and Google Assistant voice control needs no hub.
  • 250 user codes that can be limited to a date range, certain weekdays and times, or one use within 24 hours.
  • One-touch locking, a secure mode that temporarily disables the keypad, an alarm after 3 wrong codes in a row, low-battery alerts and a tamper-resistant interior cover.
  • The touchscreen Halo adds SecureScreen, which asks you to touch two random numbers before entering your code so smudges don't give the code away. The Halo Keypad uses physical push buttons.
  • BHMA Grade AAA and a UL 20-minute fire rating.

Trade-offs: No Matter, no Apple Home, and Kwikset lists no door sensor for either. Kwikset notes that its app-compatible products only work in the United States and Canada. The Halo Select costs $51 more than the touchscreen Halo and adds Matter, Apple Home, geofence auto-unlock and the door sensor.

Aura Reach

Who it's for: Matter households (Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home or SmartThings with a Thread hub) on a budget.

Key facts

  • $179 on kwikset.com as of October 2026, in Satin Nickel or Matte Black.
  • Matter over Thread for smart home control, plus Bluetooth to manage codes, settings and guest access in the Kwikset app when you are nearby.
  • Up to 250 user codes, hands-free auto-unlock using Bluetooth and geofencing, one-touch locking and auto-lock.
  • Backlit touchpad with proximity wake-up and a fingerprint-resistant matte coating.
  • Kwikset says its Signal Range Boost doubles signal strength when enabled on a Matter network.
  • Fits doors up to 2-1/4 inches thick, the widest range in the lineup.

Trade-offs: No Wi-Fi. Without a Matter hub you manage it over Bluetooth from nearby only, and Kwikset says invalid-code notifications are sent through the app when you are nearby, within Bluetooth range. It is BHMA Grade 2 rather than the Halo line's Grade AAA, and Kwikset lists no door-ajar sensor for it.

Home Connect 620

Who it's for: Homes with a Z-Wave hub or security system, especially Ring Alarm or SmartThings.

Key facts

  • $164 on kwikset.com as of October 2026, in Traditional (keypad entry) and Contemporary (touchscreen entry) styles.
  • Z-Wave 700 Long Range with S2 encryption and SmartStart for pairing with a compatible hub.
  • Kwikset says you can control and check it directly in the Ring Alarm app, which requires a Ring Alarm hub.
  • Up to 250 user codes plus a programming code, and auto-lock after 30 seconds, 1, 3, 5 or 10 minutes.
  • Kwikset rates the batteries for at least 12 months.

Trade-offs: A compatible Z-Wave controller or hub is required for remote access. Kwikset lists Z-Wave as its only wireless technology, so day-to-day control runs through your hub or security system app. BHMA Grade 2.

SmartCode 914 and 916 (Zigbee)

Kwikset still sells two Zigbee deadbolts that need a Zigbee panel or hub: the SmartCode 914 with an illuminated keypad ($206.99 on kwikset.com) and the touchscreen SmartCode 916 ($255.99 to $262.99 on the Kwikset store, depending on finish), both as of October 2026. They support 30 user codes, are BHMA Grade 2, and Kwikset lists them as working with SmartThings and Alexa. Most buyers without an existing Zigbee system will be better served by the models above.

How to choose

  1. Start with your smart home. Apple Home users should look at the Halo Select, Halo Select Plus or Aura Reach, the three models Kwikset lists with Apple Home support. Alexa and Google homes can use any Halo. Ring Alarm and other Z-Wave systems point to the Home Connect 620.
  2. Decide between Wi-Fi and Matter. Wi-Fi models need no hub and give you every feature in the Kwikset app. Matter needs a hub with Thread and Matter support, and Kwikset says Matter is an evolving standard: some platforms may not yet support every lock feature, so it publishes a feature table for each platform.
  3. Pick an entry method. Touchscreen (Halo Select, Halo), push buttons (Halo Keypad), fingerprint (Halo Touch), touchpad (Aura Reach) or a phone tap (Halo Select Plus). Every model keeps a physical key.
  4. Measure your door. Kwikset's listed thickness ranges differ by model, from 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches on the Halo Select to 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inches on the Aura Reach.
  5. Check whether you need a door sensor. The Halo Select and Halo Select Plus are the only models here whose Kwikset pages list a door sensor that tells you the door itself is open, not just unlocked.

SmartKey, batteries and the Kwikset app

  • SmartKey Security: Every model in the table uses Kwikset's SmartKey keyway, which Kwikset says lets you re-key the lock yourself in seconds and resists picking and bumping.
  • Batteries: Every model runs on 4 AA batteries, included in the box. Kwikset says its app lets you know when batteries are low.
  • Installation: Kwikset's pages for the Halo Select, Halo Select Plus, Halo Touch, Aura Reach and Home Connect 620 say they install with just a screwdriver, and the Halo Select, Halo Select Plus and Aura Reach include a guided in-app install.
  • Warranty: Kwikset's warranty page gives a one-year limited warranty on electronics.

What we don't know

  • Battery life for the Halo, Halo Select and Aura Reach. Kwikset states a battery life of at least 12 months for the Home Connect 620 and 12 months or longer for the SmartCode 914, but we did not find a figure for the Wi-Fi or Matter models.
  • Whether Apple home keys needs an Apple home hub. The Halo Select Plus page describes tap to unlock with an iPhone or Apple Watch but does not spell out the setup requirements.
  • SmartKey on the Halo Select style variants. Kwikset's spec tables list SmartKey as "No" for the Halo Select Contemporary and Soft Modern, unlike the standard Halo Select, while their feature lists still mention SmartKey Security. The Soft Modern page also shows "Where to Buy" instead of a price.
  • Halo Touch keypad wording. The Kwikset store listing mentions using "the keypad or key" from outside, but the kwikset.com product page and photo show only a fingerprint reader and keyway. We follow the product page.
  • Other models in Kwikset's catalog. Kwikset's "similar products" lists also show a 914 SmartCode with Z-Wave, a 918 HomeConnect and the original Aura. We did not find them in the Kwikset store, so we left them out of the table.

What is the difference between Kwikset Halo, Halo Select and Halo Select Plus?

The original Halo ($208) is Wi-Fi only and works with Alexa and Google. The Halo Select ($259) adds Matter over Thread, Apple Home support, geofence auto-unlock and a door sensor. Do Kwikset smart locks work with Apple Home?

Three current models do, according to Kwikset: the Halo Select, Halo Select Plus and Aura Reach, all through Matter over Thread. Matter needs a compatible smart home hub with Thread and Matter support. The Halo, Halo Keypad and Halo Touch list Alexa and Google, not Apple Home.

Do Kwikset smart locks need a hub?

The Wi-Fi models (Halo, Halo Keypad, Halo Touch, and the Halo Select and Select Plus in Wi-Fi mode) need no hub. Matter mode and the Aura Reach's smart home features need a hub with Thread and Matter support. The Home Connect 620 needs a Z-Wave hub for remote access, and the SmartCode 914 and 916 need a Zigbee hub.

What is Kwikset SmartKey?

SmartKey Security is Kwikset's re-keyable lock cylinder. Kwikset says it lets you re-key the lock yourself in seconds, for example after moving in or losing a key, and that it resists picking and bumping. Kwikset's spec tables list it on the Halo Select, Halo Select Plus, Halo Touch, Halo, Halo Keypad, Aura Reach and Home Connect 620.

What batteries do Kwikset smart locks use?

Every Kwikset smart lock on this page runs on 4 AA batteries, and Kwikset includes them in the box. Kwikset rates the Home Connect 620 for at least 12 months of battery life; we did not find a published figure for the Wi-Fi Halo models.

Does the Kwikset app work outside the US?

Kwikset's Halo product pages say products compatible with the Kwikset app only work in the United States and Canada.
