The short answer

There are two kinds of water leak detector, and most homes benefit from both. Spot sensors sit on the floor where leaks start (under sinks, behind the washer, next to the water heater) and alert you when they touch water. Whole-home monitors with an automatic shutoff valve go on your main water line, watch flow and pressure, and can turn the water off for you.

  • Best overall spot sensor kit: GoveeLife Water Leak Detector 1s. $43.99 for a Wi-Fi gateway and three sensors on us.govee.com, with a 105 dB alarm, IP67 housing and a claimed 5-year battery life.
  • Best if you want to add automatic shutoff later: YoLink Water Leak Sensor 4. $19.99 per sensor, long-range LoRa radio, a 105 dB sounder and low-temperature alerts. It can close a YoLink valve controller directly, even without internet.
  • Best without a hub: SwitchBot Water Leak Detector. $17.99, connects straight to Wi-Fi.
  • Best for Apple Home: Aqara Water Leak Sensor. $18.99, needs an Aqara hub.
  • Best for Ring homes: Ring Flood & Freeze Sensor (Newest Model). $24.99 on sale, connects over Amazon Sidewalk with no hub.
  • Best whole-home shutoff: Phyn Protect. $579.99, plumber installed on your main line.
  • Runner-up whole-home shutoff: Moen Flo Shutoff. $675.99 sale price on shop.moen.com (the page also shows a $549.98 regular price), no subscription required.

GoveeLife Water Leak Detector 1s: best overall

Who it's for: Most homes that want several sensors, phone alerts and a loud local alarm for the least money, without building a smart home system around them.

Key facts

  • $43.99 on us.govee.com for one Wi-Fi gateway (H5044) and three sensors (H5059), marked down from $54.99, as of September 2026. Kits with five or eight sensors are also listed.
  • Govee lists a 550 m (1,804 ft) range between sensor and gateway and support for up to 64 sensors.
  • Each sensor has a 105 dB alarm with four volume levels set in the app, an IP67 rating and a claimed battery life of up to 5 years.
  • Alerts arrive as app notifications and email. Govee lists Google, Alexa and IFTTT as control methods.
  • A version with a 1.5 m (4.9 ft) sensor cable costs $52.99 for a gateway and three sensors. It adds a water level monitoring mode for sump pumps, tanks and pools, but alarm mode and water level mode cannot run at the same time.

Trade-offs: The gateway only works on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and only pairs with GoveeLife H5059 and H5830 sensors, so it will not pick up older Govee sensors. Govee does not list freeze alerts for this model. If you already own the older Govee H5054 water sensor, the 1s gateway does not list it as compatible.

YoLink Water Leak Sensor 4: best for adding automatic shutoff

Who it's for: Larger homes, basements and detached garages where Wi-Fi is weak, and anyone who wants leak sensors that can close a water valve on their own.

Key facts

  • $19.99 per sensor on shop.yosmart.com as of September 2026. The Water Leak Detection Starter Kit (YoLink Hub plus four Water Leak Sensor 4s) is $72.99.
  • Uses YoLink's LoRa radio, which YoLink rates at up to 1/4 mile in open air, with 5+ years between battery changes on two AAA batteries.
  • Built-in 105 dB sounder and low-temperature alerts to warn of conditions that can freeze pipes. The housing is rated IP66.
  • Works with Alexa, Home Assistant and IFTTT.
  • YoLink Control D2D pairing lets a sensor trigger a siren or valve controller directly, without internet or AC power. YoLink's Valve Controller 2 with the EVO Valve Operator ($239.99) bolts onto an existing ball valve with no pipe cutting, and YoLink says it installs in around 15 minutes.

Trade-offs: A YoLink Hub or SpeakerHub is required for app alerts and automations, including the EVO valve kit. YoLink sells Water Leak Sensors 1 through 5, which is confusing; the Sensor 4 is the puck-style model with the sounder and freeze alerts.

SwitchBot Water Leak Detector: best without a hub

Who it's for: Renters and anyone who wants one or two sensors with phone alerts and nothing else to buy.

Key facts

  • $17.99 for the standard edition and $19.99 for the sensor cable edition on switch-bot.com as of September 2026. Multi-packs are listed too.
  • Connects directly to Wi-Fi, so no hub is needed.
  • Detects dripping water, immersion and water levels, and is rated IP67.
  • SwitchBot claims up to 2 years of battery life. It has a 1-year warranty.

Trade-offs: Battery life is shorter than the Govee, YoLink and Ring sensors. SwitchBot's product page does not list the alarm volume or voice assistant support for this sensor.

Aqara Water Leak Sensor: best for Apple Home

Who it's for: Homes that already run an Aqara hub or want leak alerts inside Apple Home, and people who like small Zigbee sensors.

Key facts

  • $18.99 on us.aqara.com as of September 2026.
  • Zigbee sensor. Aqara lists compatibility with Aqara, Apple Home, Alexa and IFTTT.
  • Aqara says it detects water at 0.5 mm, sounds a built-in buzzer and sends a push notification.
  • Runs 2+ years on one CR2032 battery, according to Aqara.
  • Pairs with the Aqara Valve Controller T1 ($69.99), a retrofit motor for existing lever or butterfly valves on 1/2, 3/4 and 1 inch pipes that runs on four AA batteries.

Trade-offs: An Aqara hub is required. us.aqara.com listed the Hub M100 at $29.99 in September 2026; the Aqara Hub M3 costs more. If you are building out a Zigbee setup, see our guide to Zigbee smart home devices.

Ring Flood & Freeze Sensor (Newest Model): best for Ring homes

Who it's for: Ring owners, and anyone without a hub who lives where Amazon Sidewalk works.

Key facts

  • $24.99 on ring.com as of September 2026, marked down from $39.99.
  • Part of Ring's newer Ring Sensors line, which connects over Amazon Sidewalk rather than Wi-Fi or a base station. Ring says no hub, sign-up fee or subscription is needed to connect, and that Sidewalk covers about 95% of the US population.
  • Runs on two AA batteries with battery life of up to 6 years, depending on events and distance to a Sidewalk gateway. Rated IP66, with a one-year limited warranty.
  • Works with Alexa and shows up in the Ring app.

Trade-offs: It relies on Amazon Sidewalk coverage near your home, and Ring notes that eligible Echo and Ring devices strengthen that network. Ring's page does not state the freeze alert temperature for this model. The older Ring Alarm Flood & Freeze Sensor ($34.99) is a Z-Wave sensor that needs a Ring Alarm base station and alerts below 40°F; ring.com listed it as out of stock in September 2026. For how Ring Alarm compares with SimpliSafe overall, see SimpliSafe vs Ring Alarm.

SimpliSafe Water Sensor: for SimpliSafe systems

Who it's for: People who already have a SimpliSafe home security system and want leak alerts routed through it.

Key facts

  • SimpliSafe sells it as an add-on under "Expand my system".
  • Sounds the alarm when it touches water. With professional monitoring, SimpliSafe says it is notified and will alert you.
  • Indoor only, powered by one CR2032 lithium battery with up to 5 years of life depending on usage, in a water-resistant housing about 2 x 1 x 2 inches.

Trade-offs: It is only useful as part of a SimpliSafe system, and the product page did not show a price in September 2026. Its product page lists no temperature sensing.

Phyn Protect: best whole-home leak detector with shutoff

Who it's for: Homeowners in single-family houses or individually plumbed townhomes who want the whole house protected, including leaks inside walls where no spot sensor sits.

Key facts

  • $579.99 on phyn.com as of September 2026. Phyn says Phyn Plus is now called Phyn Protect, and phyn.com still lists the Phyn Plus (2nd Gen) at the same price.
  • Installs on the main water line. Phyn's requirements: a main supply line of 1 1/4 inches or smaller, Wi-Fi at the install location and a power outlet within 12 feet. It has 1 inch NPSM threaded ends, and adapters are not included.
  • Uses pressure wave analysis and an ultrasonic flow sensor built by Badger Meter with no moving parts, according to Phyn.
  • Shuts water off automatically after a learning period, and lets you shut it off remotely from the free Phyn app. Also runs on-demand Plumbing Checks, sends pre-freeze warnings and tracks water use.
  • Works with Alexa, Google Assistant and IFTTT, and can monitor up to 6 properties from one account.
  • Phyn recommends a licensed plumber. It says installation usually takes one to two hours.

Trade-offs: Installation means cutting into your main water line, so budget for a plumber on top of the device price. Phyn says it works best in homes plumbed individually, so condos and apartments may not suit it. Phyn's accuracy claim cites a third-party study linked from its own page.

Moen Flo Shutoff: runner-up whole-home shutoff

Who it's for: Homes with a 1 inch or smaller main line that use Ring, Alarm.com or Alexa and want a whole-home shutoff with no required subscription.

Key facts

  • shop.moen.com shows the 900-006 with a sale price of $675.99 as of September 2026. The same page also shows a regular price of $549.98, so confirm the price at checkout.
  • Monitors pressure and flow, and Moen says its daily MicroLeak tests can find leaks as small as a single drop per minute.
  • FloSense learns your water use and can shut water off automatically. Alerts come by app, phone call and email, and it warns of freezing conditions.
  • Needs 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and a nearby AC outlet. Moen sells a 25 foot extension cable if the outlet is more than 10 feet from the water main.
  • Moen's support page lists integrations with Alarm.com, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Nice and Ring. There is no monthly fee to use the device or app.
  • Optional FloProtect plan adds a 5-year extended warranty and up to $5,000 toward your home insurance deductible after water damage, according to Moen. The standard warranty is one year.

Trade-offs: Costs more than Phyn Protect and fits smaller pipes (1 inch or smaller for this model). Moen recommends a licensed plumber because installation removes a section of pipe. Moen says Flo alerts you to abnormal water use but cannot determine where in the house the leak is.

Spot sensor or whole-home shutoff?

Spot sensors are cheap, install in seconds and tell you exactly where the water is, but they only cover the spot they sit on. A leak inside a wall can run for a long time before water reaches one.

Whole-home monitors watch everything after the main line, including hidden leaks, and can stop the water automatically. They cost hundreds of dollars plus installation and need Wi-Fi and power at the main line. Moen notes that Flo cannot tell you where in the house a leak is.

How to choose

  1. Count your risk spots (sinks, washer, water heater, dishwasher, fridge line, sump pump). Several spots favor a kit like the Govee 1s over singles.
  2. Decide whether you want a hub. No hub: SwitchBot (Wi-Fi) or Ring's newest sensor (Amazon Sidewalk). Govee includes its gateway. YoLink and Aqara need their own hubs. See our best smart home hubs guide if you are starting from scratch.
  3. Match your ecosystem. Apple Home points to Aqara. Ring households can use Ring's sensor. SimpliSafe owners should use SimpliSafe's own sensor so leaks go through their monitoring. For the whole security picture, see our best home security systems guide.
  4. Check for freeze alerts if you have cold spaces. YoLink Sensor 4, the Ring Alarm Flood & Freeze Sensor (below 40°F), Phyn Protect and Moen Flo all list freeze or low-temperature alerts. Ring's newest model is sold as a flood and freeze sensor, but its page does not describe the freeze alert. Govee, SwitchBot and Aqara do not list them for these models.
  5. Consider automatic shutoff if you travel or own a second home. Phyn Protect and Moen Flo do it for the whole home; YoLink and Aqara sensors can close an add-on valve controller that fits your existing valve without cutting pipe.
  6. Check your pipe size before buying a whole-home unit. Phyn Protect is for main lines up to 1 1/4 inches. The Moen Flo 900-006 is for 1 inch or smaller.

For more sensor types, including presence and smoke sensors, see our smart home sensors guide.

What we don't know

  • SimpliSafe Water Sensor price. SimpliSafe's product page did not show a price in September 2026.
  • Moen Flo's exact checkout price. shop.moen.com shows a $675.99 sale price and a $549.98 regular price for the 900-006 on the same page. We list $675.99 because it is the price the store's product data uses.
  • FloProtect monthly cost. Moen's product page describes the plan's benefits but did not show a monthly price we could confirm.
  • Freeze alerts on Ring's newest sensor. Ring's page for the Sidewalk model does not describe the freeze alert or its threshold. The older Ring Alarm model alerts below 40°F.
  • Aqara's water rating. Aqara's US page lists both IPX5 and IP67 for the same sensor, so we do not state a rating for it.
  • Real-world reliability. We found no independent data comparing false alarm rates or battery life for these sensors. Battery life figures are maker claims.
  • Brands we left out. We could not read product details or prices from the official pages of some brands, including Kangaroo and eufy, on the day we checked, so they are not ranked here.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best water leak detector for home use?

For most homes, the GoveeLife Water Leak Detector 1s: $43.99 for a Wi-Fi gateway and three sensors with 105 dB alarms, IP67 housings and a claimed 5-year battery life (us.govee.com, September 2026). If you want the whole house covered and the water shut off automatically, Phyn Protect ($579.99) is the whole-home pick.

Do water leak detectors really work?

Yes, within their limits. A spot sensor only reacts when water reaches it, so it works best placed on the floor right under a sink, water heater, washer or dishwasher. A whole-home monitor such as Phyn Protect or Moen Flo watches flow and pressure on the main line, so it can catch leaks inside walls; Moen notes that Flo cannot tell you where the leak is.

Do I need a hub for a water leak sensor?

It depends on the brand. The SwitchBot Water Leak Detector connects straight to Wi-Fi, and Ring's newest Flood & Freeze Sensor uses Amazon Sidewalk with no hub. GoveeLife includes its gateway in the kit. YoLink and Aqara sensors need their own hubs. SimpliSafe's Water Sensor works as part of a SimpliSafe system.

Which water leak detector is the most accurate?

They measure different things. Spot sensors detect contact with water; Aqara says its sensor triggers at 0.5 mm. Whole-home monitors look for abnormal flow: Moen says Flo's daily MicroLeak test finds leaks as small as one drop per minute, and Phyn cites a third-party study calling Phyn Protect the most accurate whole-home option. We found no independent head-to-head data.

Can a water leak detector shut off my water automatically?

Yes, if it has or controls a valve. Phyn Protect and Moen Flo Shutoff install on the main line and shut water off themselves. YoLink sensors can close YoLink's Valve Controller 2 with the EVO Valve Operator ($239.99), and Aqara sensors can close the Aqara Valve Controller T1 ($69.99); both attach to an existing valve without cutting pipe.

Do water leak detectors need a subscription?

Usually not. The GoveeLife, YoLink, SwitchBot and Aqara product pages do not mention a subscription for leak alerts, Phyn's app is free, and Moen says there is no monthly fee for Flo (an optional FloProtect plan adds an extended warranty and deductible coverage). Ring says its newest sensor needs no subscription to connect, but its older Ring Alarm sensor needs a Ring subscription for mobile and email notifications. SimpliSafe says that with professional monitoring, it is notified and will alert you when its Water Sensor trips.

Where should I put water leak sensors?

On the floor where leaks usually start: under kitchen and bathroom sinks, behind the washing machine, next to the water heater, under the dishwasher, behind the fridge if it has a water line, next to toilets and beside the sump pump. Cable versions from Govee and SwitchBot reach into tight spots.
