Subscription plans and cost
Plans are where these two brands differ most.
Ring Protect plans
As of September 2026, ring.com lists four plans. Each covers one location, and all auto-renew until canceled.
- Ring Solo ($4.99/mo or $49.99/yr): video recording, up to 180 days of video history, person, package and vehicle alerts, and Extended Live View for one doorbell or camera.
- Ring Multi ($9.99/mo or $99.99/yr): the same for every device at one address, plus extended warranty.
- Ring Pro ($19.99/mo or $199.99/yr): everything in Multi, plus Video Descriptions, Familiar Faces (beta), Active Warnings, Video Search and 24/7 Professional Monitoring for Ring Alarm.
- Virtual Security Guard ($99/mo): everything in Pro, plus live video monitoring by trained agents, real-time intruder deterrence and proactive verified dispatch requests. Ring's help pages say the plan includes a limited number of monitored events per month.
Add-ons: Pro Intelligence brings Ring Pro's smart features to one camera for $5/mo on Solo or Multi, and 24/7 continuous recording is $3/mo per eligible camera, with recordings kept for up to 14 days. Ring says it does not own its monitoring center.
Arlo Secure plans
Arlo says its plan names recently changed, so older reviews may use different names. As of September 2026, us.arlo.com lists:
- Smart Aware, single camera ($9.99/mo or $95.88/yr).
- Smart Aware, unlimited cameras ($19.99/mo or $215.88/yr).
- Smart Secure ($29.99/mo or $299.98/yr, unlimited cameras).
- Ultra Secure ($49.99/mo or $479.88/yr, unlimited cameras).
Every tier includes 60 days of video history, Smart Activity Zones, person, animal, vehicle and package detection, Person Recognition, Vehicle Recognition, Custom Detection, Fire Detection, Video Search, Arlo Summary and Theft Replacement. Supported cameras can also alert on barking, screams, breaking glass and gunshots. Subscribers get 15% off on arlo.com; Ring subscribers get 10% off select products.
Smart Secure adds Emergency Response, Threat Assessment (which can escalate a detected threat to professional agents), 24/7 Professional Monitoring for the Arlo Home Security System, the Arlo Safe family app and a certificate for home insurance discounts. Ultra Secure adds 24/7 continuous recording on up to three plugged-in cameras, kept for 30 days. Arlo says Ultra Secure is the best plan for Arlo Home Security System owners, and that a separate plan is needed for each address.
What a year of plans costs
Using the annual prices above (September 2026):
| Plan | Covers | Year 1 cost |
|---|---|---|
| Ring Solo | 1 camera or doorbell | $49.99 |
| Arlo Smart Aware (single) | 1 camera | $95.88 |
| Ring Multi | All devices at 1 address | $99.99 |
| Ring Pro | All devices, plus alarm monitoring | $199.99 |
| Arlo Smart Aware (unlimited) | All cameras at 1 address | $215.88 |
| Arlo Smart Secure | All cameras, plus alarm monitoring | $299.98 |
| Arlo Ultra Secure | Smart Secure plus 24/7 recording on 3 cameras | $479.88 |
| Ring Virtual Security Guard | Ring Pro plus live agents | $1,188.00 (monthly only) |
For a whole house of cameras, Ring costs less than half as much per year ($99.99 vs $215.88). Arlo's higher price buys more detection in the base plan, including Person Recognition, Vehicle Recognition and Custom Detection.
Cameras
Arlo sells mostly wire-free cameras. As of September 30, 2026 on us.arlo.com:
- Ultra (3rd Gen): 4K HDR from an 8 megapixel sensor, 180 degree diagonal view, 12x digital zoom, auto zoom and tracking, spotlight, color night vision and a removable battery. It needs an Arlo SmartHub, which comes in the 2, 3 and 4 camera kits. A 2 camera kit was $220.99 on sale (listed at $349.99).
- Pro (6th Gen): 2K HDR, 160 degree diagonal view, spotlight, color night vision, removable battery, dual-band Wi-Fi. A SmartHub is optional. One camera was $100.99 on sale (listed at $124.99).
- Essential (3rd Gen): 2K, 130 degree view, rechargeable battery, $69.99. A plug-in version is $39.99 on sale (listed at $49.99).
- Wired Floodlight: 2,000 lumens, 2K HDR, 160 degree view, $80.99 on sale (listed at $149.99). A battery-powered Wireless Floodlight was $110.99 (listed at $249.99).
- Go 2: a battery camera that connects over 4G LTE or Wi-Fi, for places without Wi-Fi or power, $159.99 on sale (listed at $199.99).
Ring sells three outdoor families (Outdoor Cam, Spotlight Cam, Floodlight Cam), each in a 2K, a Plus and a 4K Pro version. As of September 30, 2026 on ring.com:
- Outdoor Cam 4K Pro: 4K, 140 degree horizontal by 85 degree vertical view, up to 10x Enhanced Zoom, radar-based 3D Motion Detection, Wi-Fi 6, siren. Plug-in, wired or Power over Ethernet. From $129.99 on sale (listed at $199.99).
- Outdoor Cam 2K: battery or plug-in, from $49.99 on sale (listed at $99.99). The original 1080p Outdoor Cam was $39.99.
- Spotlight Cam 4K Pro from $179.99 (listed at $249.99), plug-in, wired or Power over Ethernet, and Floodlight Cam 4K Pro from $199.99 (listed at $279.99), plug-in or wired.
Some results in search still say Ring cameras top out at 1080p. That is out of date: most current Ring cameras and doorbells are sold as 2K or 4K models.
The practical difference: if you want 4K where there is no outlet, Arlo's Ultra is the only one of the two that does it. If you can run power, Ring's 4K Pro cameras cost less and add radar motion detection. For more picks across brands, see our best outdoor smart cameras guide.
Video doorbells
Ring has the far wider doorbell range, with eight models on ring.com, including:
- Battery Doorbell 2K: 140 by 140 degree head-to-toe view, built-in battery, from $39.99 on sale (listed at $99.99).
- Battery Doorbell 4K Pro: 4K, 140 by 140 degree head-to-toe view, up to 10x Enhanced Zoom, 3D Motion Detection, Wi-Fi 6 and a Quick Release Ultra Battery Pack. From $149.99 on sale (listed at $249.99).
- Wired Doorbell 2K ($39.99, listed at $79.99), Wired Doorbell 4K Pro (from $149.99), a Peephole Cam 2K for doors you cannot drill (from $99.99) and the Power over Ethernet Wired Doorbell 4K Elite ($499.99).
Arlo's US store lists one doorbell, the Video Doorbell (2nd Gen). It records 2K in a square 1:1 frame (up to 1944 by 1944), has a 180 degree diagonal view, 12x digital zoom and black and white night vision up to 20 feet. It always runs on its battery; wiring it to an 8 to 24V AC doorbell keeps the battery topped up. It was $29.50 on sale on September 30, 2026 (listed at $79.99). Arlo notes its video call feature needs a paid plan.
If the doorbell is the main purchase, Ring gives you more choice of power, resolution and price, while Arlo's one model was the cheapest doorbell on either site that day. See our best doorbell cameras guide for the wider field.
Alarm systems: Ring Alarm vs Arlo Home Security System
Ring Alarm (2nd Gen) kits were $199.99 for 5 pieces (listed at $244.95), $249.99 for 8 pieces and $329.99 for 14 pieces on September 30, 2026. Ring Alarm Pro kits, with a built-in eero Wi-Fi 6 router, started at $299.99. Professional monitoring comes with Ring Pro at $19.99/mo. We compare Ring Alarm with a dedicated alarm brand in SimpliSafe vs Ring Alarm.
Arlo Home Security System kits were $149.99 with 2 sensors (listed at $199.99) and $219.99 with 5 sensors (listed at $299.99). Arlo's All-in-One Sensor has 8 selectable detection functions, including motion, open and close, water leak, freeze, tilt and smoke alarm listening. Professional monitoring needs Smart Secure at $29.99/mo. A Cellular & Battery Backup unit is sold separately ($79.99). Arlo says the system works without Arlo cameras.
For monitoring cost alone, Ring is $10/mo cheaper.
What works without a subscription
- Ring: Ring says every camera and doorbell includes Live View, motion alerts, Two-Way Talk, customizable Motion Zones and Alexa integration with no plan. Cloud video history, snapshot capture and person detection need Ring Protect. Remote arming of Ring Alarm through Device Modes is a plan feature.
- Arlo: Arlo says its cameras and doorbell keep sending motion notifications and showing live video after the trial. Cloud storage, interactive notifications and object detection need a plan. Arlo also describes storing clips locally on a compatible SmartHub or Base Station.

Smart home and local storage
Arlo product pages show compatibility with Amazon Alexa, Google Home and IFTTT, and the camera pages add Samsung SmartThings. The Video Doorbell (2nd Gen) page also lists Apple Home; the current Arlo camera pages we checked do not. Arlo's SmartHubs add local storage: the Ultra 2 SmartHub ($149.99) takes a microSD card and the Pro SmartHub ($99.99) stores to a USB drive.
Ring is owned by Amazon, and its product pages list Works with Alexa, including Live View on Echo Show and Fire TV. We did not find Google Home or Apple Home listed on the Ring product pages we checked. Ring's local storage option is a microSD card in the Ring Alarm Pro base station, which ring.com lists as a Ring Protect plan feature.
Privacy
Arlo says it will not share videos or account information with law enforcement without a legally enforceable search warrant or court order, and does not use private videos to train its models unless you choose to donate them. Arlo keeps cloud videos for your plan's storage period unless you delete them sooner.
Ring runs Community Requests in its Neighbors app, where verified local public safety agencies can ask people in an area to share footage. Sharing is voluntary and nothing is shared automatically, but if you share, your home address and account email go to the investigator with the video, the video goes to Axon Evidence, and it cannot be retracted. Ring also offers optional end-to-end video encryption; encrypted videos cannot be viewed through Alexa, Fire TV or ring.com, and cameras using it are not eligible for Virtual Security Guard. Familiar Faces is not available in Illinois, Texas or Portland, Oregon, and Arlo's Person Recognition is also unavailable in some regions.
Who should buy which
- Buy Ring for the lowest plan cost across several cameras, 180 days of history, more doorbell choices, cheaper alarm monitoring or live agents, or an Alexa home.
- Buy Arlo for 4K on battery power, face and vehicle recognition in the base plan, Google Home or SmartThings, a cellular camera (Go 2), or SmartHub local storage.

What we don't know
- Arlo Smart Secure's exact annual price. The Arlo plans page lists $299.98/yr, while Arlo's store sells a 12 month Smart Secure plan for $299.88. We show the plans page figure.
- Sale end dates. Both stores showed large discounts on September 30, 2026 with no end date. Regular prices are the listed prices shown above.
- Apple Home on Arlo cameras. Arlo's Video Doorbell (2nd Gen) page says it works with Apple Home, but the current Arlo camera pages we checked list Alexa, Google Home, IFTTT and SmartThings only. Check the page for the exact camera before you buy.
- Arlo's monitoring price. The Arlo Home Security System page says to add a plan with Professional Monitoring for $24.99 per month, while the Arlo plans page lists Smart Secure, the plan with 24/7 Professional Monitoring, at $29.99/mo. We show the plans page figure.
- How many events Virtual Security Guard covers. Ring says the plan includes a limited number of events per month but did not show the number on the pages we read.
- Real-world reliability. We found no independent data comparing uptime, battery life in use or alert speed between the two brands.
How this page was put together
We did not physically test either brand's cameras. This comparison is based on plan pages, product pages, specs and FAQs on us.arlo.com and ring.com, Ring help articles on Community Requests, encryption and Virtual Security Guard, Ring's article on using cameras without a subscription, and Arlo's Privacy Pledge, warranty page and end of life article, all checked September 30, 2026. Both brands change prices often, so check the maker's site before you buy.

Frequently asked questions
Is Arlo or Ring better?
Ring suits most budgets better: Ring Multi records every camera at one address for $9.99/mo or $99.99/yr with up to 180 days of video, and Ring Alarm monitoring is $19.99/mo. Arlo is better for a battery-powered 4K camera, face and vehicle recognition in its cheapest plan, or Google Home and SmartThings support (prices as of September 2026).
Is Arlo more expensive than Ring?
Yes, for subscriptions. As of September 2026, a plan covering every camera at one address costs $99.99/yr with Ring Multi and $215.88/yr with Arlo Smart Aware. Plans with professional alarm monitoring cost $199.99/yr (Ring Pro) and $299.98/yr (Arlo Smart Secure). Hardware prices overlap, and both brands were running deep sales on September 30, 2026.
Can you use Arlo or Ring cameras without a subscription?
Yes. Both keep sending motion alerts and showing live video without a plan, and Ring also lists Two-Way Talk, Motion Zones and Alexa integration as free. Without a plan you lose cloud recordings on both, plus smart detection. Arlo cameras can also store clips locally through a compatible Arlo SmartHub. Ring's local option, a microSD card in Ring Alarm Pro, is listed as a plan feature.
What are the cons of using Arlo?
Arlo plans cost more than Ring's (from $9.99/mo for one camera or $19.99/mo for unlimited cameras as of September 2026), cloud history is 60 days instead of up to 180, the 4K Ultra (3rd Gen) needs a SmartHub, Arlo sells only one doorbell in its US store, and professional monitoring requires both the Arlo Home Security System and the $29.99/mo Smart Secure plan.
What are the downsides of Ring cameras?
Ring's 4K outdoor cameras need a plug, wiring or Power over Ethernet, face recognition (Familiar Faces) needs Ring Pro or a $5/mo per camera add-on, and Familiar Faces is not available in Illinois, Texas or Portland, Oregon. If you answer a police Community Request, your address and email go with the video and it cannot be retracted. Ring's product pages list Alexa but not Google Home.
Is Arlo phasing out cameras?
Not its current range. As of September 2026 Arlo sells 2025 releases of its Pro (6th Gen), Ultra (3rd Gen) and Essential (3rd Gen) cameras. Arlo does retire older models under its end of life policy: retired devices keep live view, motion alerts and local storage on a compatible SmartHub, get critical security updates for one year after the end of life date, and then stop receiving firmware updates.
Does Ring or Arlo share video with police?
Neither shares video automatically. Arlo says it only shares videos or account information with law enforcement when given a legally enforceable search warrant or court order. Ring lets verified local agencies post Community Requests in its Neighbors app; sharing is voluntary, but shared video goes to the investigator with your address and email and cannot be retracted.
