Best Security Camera Without a Subscription (2026)
By Ethan Halfhide · Updated
The best security camera without a subscription for most homes is the Reolink Argus 4 Pro ($194.99 as of September 2026): 4K, a 180° view, free person and vehicle detection and microSD storage with no monthly fee. The TP-Link Tapo C120 ($39.99) is the budget pick, and the Aqara Camera Hub G5 Pro suits Apple Home. Below, eight cameras compared on what stays free.

The short answer
A security camera works without a subscription when three things stay free: recording to storage you own (a microSD card, built-in memory, a home hub or a NAS), smart alerts that tell a person from a passing car, and the ability to scroll back through what happened. Every camera below does the first. Most of them also do the second on the camera itself.
- Best overall: Reolink Argus 4 Pro. 4K across a 180° view, wire-free, person, vehicle and animal detection, microSD up to 512 GB and no monthly fee for local storage.
- Best budget: TP-Link Tapo C120. A plug-in 2K camera for indoors or out (IP66) with free person, pet, vehicle and baby cry detection and microSD up to 512 GB.
- Best for Apple Home and smart home fans: Aqara Camera Hub G5 Pro. On-device AI, 8 GB built-in storage, NAS and RTSP, HomeKit Secure Video support, and a Zigbee and Thread hub inside.
- Best cheap battery camera: TP-Link Tapo C425. Wire-free and magnetic, free person, pet and vehicle detection, microSD up to 512 GB.
- Best solar pan and tilt: eufy SoloCam S340. Dual lens, 360° pan, solar panel included, 8 GB built-in storage and no monthly fee.
- Best indoor: eufy Indoor Cam S350 for Alexa homes, or Aqara Camera Hub G350 for Matter and Apple homes.
- Cheapest, with a catch: Wyze Cam v4. Records 24/7 to a microSD card for free, but person, pet, package and vehicle detection come with a Wyze plan.

Reolink Argus 4 Pro: best overall
Who it's for: Anyone who wants one wire-free camera to cover the whole front or back of a house, with no monthly bill.
Key facts
- $194.99 on reolink.com as of September 2026.
- Two 4 mm lenses stitched into one 180° image at 5120 x 1440 (Reolink calls it 4K), with ColorX color night vision using an f/1.0 lens and a 1/1.8 inch sensor instead of infrared.
- Detects people, vehicles and animals, with a 170° PIR motion sensor.
- Reolink's own words: "No Monthly Fees For Local Storage." Records to a microSD card up to 512 GB, or to a Reolink Home Hub if you run several cameras. Reolink Cloud is optional.
- 5,000 mAh battery, works with Reolink Solar Panel 2 (6 W). Dual-band Wi-Fi 6 (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz).
- IP66, works with Google Assistant and Alexa.
Trade-offs: Recording is triggered by motion, not continuous. Battery life depends on settings, use and temperature, so an unsunny spot means regular charging. The frame rate tops out at 15 fps.
TP-Link Tapo C120: best budget
Who it's for: Anyone who wants a cheap, reliable camera for a room, a garage or a covered porch, and can reach an outlet.
Key facts
- $39.99 on Tapo's US store as of September 2026 (list $44.99). Three-packs and four-packs cost less per camera.
- 2K (2560 x 1440), color night vision with two spotlights, 98.5° horizontal field of view.
- IP66, rated for indoor and outdoor use from -13°F to 113°F.
- Tapo says person, pet, vehicle and baby cry detection work "without a subscription", and its spec sheet lists app notifications of AI detection events with a snapshot.
- microSD up to 512 GB (card sold separately). Tapo says that is enough for 37 days of 2K footage.
- Works with Alexa, Google Assistant and Samsung SmartThings. 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only.
Trade-offs: It needs power from an outlet, and outdoor installs mean running a cable. There is no HomeKit or Matter support listed. Cloud history, and snapshots in notifications on some Tapo models, sit in Tapo Care.
Aqara Camera Hub G5 Pro: best for Apple Home and smart home fans
Who it's for: Apple Home users, Home Assistant or Frigate tinkerers, and anyone who wants the camera to run automations locally.
Key facts
- $199.99 for the Wi-Fi version and $229.99 for PoE on us.aqara.com as of September 2026.
- 2688 x 1520 (Aqara calls it 2.6K or 4MP), f/1.0 lens with a 1/1.8 inch sensor, 133° diagonal field of view, built-in spotlight.
- On-device AI recognizes faces, people, vehicles and animals, flags lingering people and delivered packages, and hears alarms and baby cries.
- Stores to 8 GB of encrypted built-in eMMC, supports SMB NAS storage and RTSP streaming to software like Frigate and Blue Iris. Aqara's own blog lists the built-in storage as "no subscription needed".
- Works with HomeKit Secure Video. It is also a Zigbee and Thread hub, supports Matter, and works with Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant.
- IP65 and rated down to -30°C (-22°F).
Trade-offs: 8 GB fills fast, so plan on a NAS or HomeKit Secure Video if you want longer history. Apple says HomeKit Secure Video needs an iCloud+ subscription and a home hub (HomePod, Apple TV or iPad), so that route is a subscription, just not Aqara's. Aqara's cloud storage comes with a 30-day free trial.
TP-Link Tapo C425: best cheap battery camera
Who it's for: Renters and anyone who wants a camera up in five minutes without drilling or wiring.
Key facts
- $76.99 on Tapo's US store as of September 2026 (list $119.99). A kit with the Tapo solar panel is $99.99.
- 2K QHD (2560 x 1440), color night vision with four spotlights, 142° field of view, IP66.
- Free person, pet and vehicle detection ("Multiple AI Detection, All for Free!" in Tapo's words).
- microSD up to 512 GB. Tapo's Tapo Care page says a plan is not required to use its cameras.
- Up to 300 days of battery per charge in TP-Link's lab test at 230 seconds of use a day, or 180 days at 360 seconds a day.
Trade-offs: Tapo's spec sheet lists notifications with a snapshot as a Tapo Care feature on this model, so free alerts are text only. 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, and no HomeKit or Matter listed.
eufy SoloCam S340: best solar pan and tilt
Who it's for: Yards and driveways where one fixed camera leaves blind spots and there is no outlet nearby.
Key facts
- $199.99 on eufy.com as of September 2026.
- Two lenses: a 3K (2880 x 1620) wide lens and a 2K telephoto, with 8x hybrid zoom and 355° horizontal pan. It tracks moving subjects.
- Solar panel included. eufy says two hours of direct sun a day keeps it powered, and it runs up to three months on the battery alone.
- 8 GB of built-in storage with "No monthly fee or hidden costs" according to eufy. Adding a HomeBase S380 expands storage and upgrades detection with face recognition.
- On-device human and vehicle detection. Works with Alexa and Google Assistant. 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only.
Trade-offs: 8 GB is small without a HomeBase. eufy says battery cameras like this one cannot record 24/7, even with a HomeBase.
eufy Indoor Cam S350: best indoor for Alexa homes
Who it's for: Watching a living room, nursery or pet area with enough zoom to read detail across the room.
Key facts
- $139.99 on eufy.com as of September 2026.
- Two cameras, 4K, 3x optical zoom and up to 8x digital zoom, 360° pan and tilt with active AI tracking.
- "Local Storage, No Monthly Fee" per eufy. Supports 24/7 recording. eufy says a 128 GB microSD card holds up to about 120 hours (5 days) of continuous recording at the highest resolution. Works with HomeBase S380 and HomeBase 3 for more storage.
- Dual-band Wi-Fi 6 with WPA3.
- Streams to Alexa and Google Assistant smart displays.
Trade-offs: No HomeKit and no Google Home support, according to eufy's own FAQ. Indoor only.
Aqara Camera Hub G350: best indoor for Matter and Apple homes
Who it's for: People building a Matter or Apple Home setup who want the indoor camera to double as a hub.
Key facts
- $139.99 on us.aqara.com as of September 2026.
- 4K wide lens (133°) plus a 2.5K telephoto, 9x hybrid zoom, 360° pan and tilt with AI auto tracking.
- Aqara says all AI processing happens on the device: faces, pets, gestures and six sounds, including a baby crying and a dog barking.
- microSD up to 512 GB for 24/7 recording, NAS backup, and optional end-to-end encrypted cloud storage that is opt-in with no automatic trial.
- Physical privacy mode: the lens retracts.
- Works as an Aqara Zigbee hub for up to 80 Aqara Zigbee devices, a Thread hub, and a Matter controller and bridge. Aqara lists Apple Home (including HomeKit Secure Video), Google Home and Alexa support.
Trade-offs: Its Zigbee hub only supports Aqara Zigbee devices, not third-party ones. Aqara notes that Matter camera support is still limited across platforms. It needs a power outlet.

Wyze Cam v4: cheapest, but smart alerts cost extra
Who it's for: People on a tight budget who mainly want continuous recording they can scroll through.
Key facts
- $44.98 on wyze.com as of September 2026.
- 2.5K QHD (2560 x 1440), color night vision, motion-activated spotlight, IP65.
- Records 24/7 to a microSD card for free (card sold separately).
- Wyze says every Wyze Cam has motion detection, and that person, pet, package and vehicle detection are included with its subscription plans. Cam Plus is $2.99 a month or $29.99 a year per camera as of September 2026.
Trade-offs: Without a plan you get motion alerts, not "a person is at the door" alerts. Wyze's older free tier, Cam Plus Lite, does not list the Cam v4 among compatible cameras. For other options, see our Wyze alternatives.
Cameras that need a plan to be useful
Some popular brands work without a subscription only in a limited way:
- Ring: Ring says its products "provide certain features without a plan", but video recording and person, package and vehicle alerts come with Ring Protect. Ring Solo is $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year for one device, and Ring Multi is $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year (ring.com, September 2026).
- Blink: Blink cameras can save clips locally to a USB drive plugged into a Sync Module 2, or a microSD card in a Sync Module XR. Blink says smart detection needs a Blink Subscription Plan, and the Sync Module Core does not support local storage.
How to choose
- Decide where the footage lives. microSD is cheapest and simplest. Built-in memory (Aqara G5 Pro, eufy S340) can't be pulled out by a thief but is small. A HomeBase, Home Hub or NAS keeps footage in the house even if a camera is stolen.
- Check what the free alerts actually say. "Motion detected" gets old fast. Most picks above list free person detection; the Wyze Cam v4 does not without a plan. The Tapo C425 sends free alerts without a snapshot.
- Match the power to the spot. Plug-in cameras such as the Wyze Cam v4, eufy Indoor Cam S350 and Aqara G350 can record 24/7 to local storage. Battery cameras record on motion and need sun or charging.
- Match your ecosystem. Apple Home points to Aqara. Alexa homes do well with eufy, Tapo and Reolink. Home Assistant and Frigate users should look for RTSP, which Aqara lists for the G5 Pro.
- Budget for the card. Almost none of these include a microSD card. A 128 GB to 256 GB card is the real cost of "free" storage.

What we don't know
- Wyze microSD limit. The Wyze Cam v4 spec sheet says microSD cards up to 256 GB, while the FAQ on the same page says up to 512 GB. Use a 256 GB card to be safe.
- Reolink Argus 4 Pro bundle. The reolink.com page lists $194.99 for the Argus 4 Pro and also shows a "+ SP" (solar panel) listing. We could not confirm from the page text whether the panel is included at that price.
- Real battery life. Battery claims (Tapo's 300 days, eufy's three months) are the makers' own lab or best-case figures.
- Future paywalls. Makers can move free features into paid plans with a firmware or app update. Everything here reflects the makers' pages on September 30, 2026.
How this page was put together
HomeGearLab does not test products in a lab or at home. We compared each maker's product pages, spec sheets, support articles and US store prices, plus subscription plan pages for Tapo, Wyze, Ring and Blink, all checked on September 30, 2026. Picks are based on what each maker says works without a plan. Prices change often, so confirm before you buy.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best security camera without a subscription?
For most homes, the Reolink Argus 4 Pro ($194.99 on reolink.com as of September 2026): 4K across a 180 degree view, person, vehicle and animal detection, and microSD storage up to 512 GB with no monthly fee. On a budget, the TP-Link Tapo C120 ($39.99 on Tapo's US store) gives free person, pet and vehicle alerts and microSD storage for indoor or outdoor use.
What security cameras don't require monthly payments?
Cameras that record to storage you own. TP-Link Tapo, Reolink, eufy and Aqara all sell cameras that record to a microSD card, built-in memory, a home hub or a NAS, with cloud plans kept optional. Wyze cameras also record to microSD for free, but Wyze includes person, pet, package and vehicle detection in its paid plans.
Is there a monthly fee for Blink?
Not to use the cameras, but it limits what you get. Blink cameras can save clips locally to a USB drive in a Sync Module 2 or a microSD card in a Sync Module XR. Blink says smart detection and some other features need a Blink Subscription Plan, and the Sync Module Core does not support local storage.
Can Ring cameras work without a subscription?
Only partly. Ring says its devices provide certain features without a plan, but video recording and person, package and vehicle alerts come with a Ring Protect plan. As of September 2026, Ring Solo costs $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year for one device.
How do security cameras store video without a subscription?
On a microSD card inside the camera, on built-in memory, on a base station or home hub such as eufy HomeBase or the Reolink Home Hub, or on a NAS on your home network. Most cameras do not include the microSD card, so budget for one.
Do cameras without a subscription still send alerts to my phone?
Yes. Every camera on this page sends app notifications for free. The difference is what the alert says: Tapo, Reolink, eufy and Aqara list person or object detection without a plan, while Wyze sends motion alerts and puts person detection in its paid plans. On the Tapo C425, snapshots in notifications are a Tapo Care feature.
What happens to local footage if someone steals the camera?
If the footage is only on a microSD card or built-in memory inside the camera, it leaves with the camera. A home hub, base station or NAS kept indoors avoids that, which is why eufy HomeBase, the Reolink Home Hub and NAS support are worth considering for outdoor cameras.
Which camera without a subscription works with Apple HomeKit?
Aqara's Camera Hub G5 Pro and Camera Hub G350 both support HomeKit Secure Video, according to Aqara, and both work with Matter platforms. Note that Apple requires an iCloud+ subscription and a home hub for HomeKit Secure Video recording. The eufy Indoor Cam S350 does not support HomeKit, according to eufy.
